Jacob Lawrence wins Bovicelli Competition
Congratulations to Jacob Lawrence, the winner of the inaugural Schloß Weißenbrunn international singing competition (3 June, 2020), this year focussing on the music of Giovanni Bovicelli. The prize pool of Eu 9,500 was shared between six prize-winners. The competition attracted 96 competitors from 25 countries. Jacob sang with the ACC from 2009 until 2016, when he left to study Early Music at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. We met up with Jacob in Bruges in July 2019, where he surprised the ACC singers and Friends group with a private recital.
Erika Tandiono wins ‘Young Talent Award’
Congratulations to Erika Tandiono on winning the ‘Young Talent Award’, one of six prestigious prizes in the inaugural Schloß Weißenbrunn international singing competition (3 June, 2020). Erika sang in the ACC from 2011 until 2018, when she began a Masters Degree in Early Music at the University of the Arts in Bremen, Germany. Erika sang with us again in July 2019 in a performance at the Michaeliskirche in Hamburg.

Douglas Lawrence talks about the ACC’s first 4 years
In 2011, we decided to pay ACC singers to perform. This video was created at this turning point in the ACC’s history. Paid concerts have become an important affirmation in the early careers of the young singers who work with us. Ensemble singing as a career path is almost non-existent in Australia. While opera singers train for the loudest and most beautiful solo sound, ensemble singers train for a high degree of musicianship, the ability to sight-read at a high level, produce a good blending sound, to be able to listen and continually adjust to other singers and to sing with absolute rhythmical accuracy. Douglas Lawrence was recognised with an AM in the 2020 Australia Day honours for his role promoting ensemble singing and encouraging young singers.
