Soul of Anzac

To mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Douglas Lawrence has chosen an absorbing program from six of the countries involved: England, France, the USA, Australia, Germany and Turkey. In his 1916 poem, ‘The Soul of Anzac’, Sydney journalist, Roderic Quinn speaks of the feelings of Australian soldiers and of their families. Composer Brenton Broadstock will set this moving commentary for the Australian Chamber Choir.

Kakadu Man

Bill ‘Kakadu Man’ Neidjie, elder of the Gagudju clan, was responsible for opening his native territory to the general public, inviting Australians and international guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the Kakadu National Park, with its sacred ancient rock art sites. To ensure that the history and philosophy of his people were not forgotten, Neidjie broke taboos by publishing some of his people’s traditional stories in two books of poetry. With permission from the poet’s family, the Australian Chamber Choir has commissioned Tom Henry to set extracts from Neidjie’s poems to music. The poems speak of a place where the spiritual world meets the physical. Some would say that all art comes from such a place. Other works on the program have been chosen for their resonance with this theme.

The ACC will tour a Kakadu Man program with 16 concerts in Germany, Denmark and Switzerland during June and July, 2015.

A London Coronation

Celebrating the 65th anniversary of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne, the Australian Chamber Choir presents the marvellous music that helped to make her coronation remarkable: a veritable treasury of the best English choral music from the last five centuries. Organ, trumpets, brass and kettle drums enrich the choir’s “simply phenomenal” sound.

The ACC8 is eight singers from the internationally acclaimed Australian Chamber Choir, directed by Douglas Lawrence. The ensemble has appeared in the Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields and Albury Chamber Music Festivals. In this performance, the singers will perform Byrd, Bach, Brahms and Bruckner in a one-hour program. After the performance, you are invited for drinks in the Oak Parlour

St John Passion

Bach’s Passion according to St John was written during the composer’s first year at St Thomas’ Church, Leipzig (1724). Bach’s St John and later his St Matthew were much more passionate and theatrical than settings that preceded them and the term “Passion” has become synonymous in music with these, its two greatest examples. Many of the instruments chosen for the St John were rarely heard even in Bach’s time: the viola da gamba and oboes da caccia lend a distinctive and contrasting sound to some of the solo arias. When such a work is performed using modern instruments, much of its unique character is lost.
