– not really a silly question!
Johann Sebastian Bach was born on 21 March 1685. Our paparazzi snapped him celebrating ahead of his birthday this week with a famous friend at the Heavenly Baroque Classic Bar (above). Do you recognise the friend pictured? – Yes, it’s Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!
Did Bach meet Mozart?
– not really a silly question. In 1764, the eight-year-old Mozart was introduced to Johann Christian Bach (the eighteenth child of Johann Sebastian), who had just moved to London. Mozart was on a concert tour with his parents and his twelve-year-old sister, Nanerl, who was also a musical prodigy. JC Bach spent five months teaching Wolfgang Amadeus composition. During his five months in London, Wolfgang Amadeus arranged three piano sonatas from Bach’s Op.5 as keyboard concertos and then put his new orchestration skills to work composing his First Symphony. In later life Wolfgang Amadeus praised Nannerl’s compositions, none of which survive. One would hope that she too might have been given the opportunity to study with JC Bach.
