Keys to Heaven

Pietro Perugino, The Delivery of the Keys (1481), Sistine Chapel, Rome

3 – 24 November 2019   |   Allegri Miserere
Pietro Perugino painted The Delivery of the Keys in the newly-constructed Sistine Chapel in 1481. The fresco depicts Christ handing St Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven. When Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez joined the Vatican choir in 1489, this painting would have been a focal point in a minimally decorated Sistine Chapel. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was appointed to direct the choir in 1551. He was no doubt inspired by this fresco when he wrote the Motet Tu es Petrus, based on Christ’s words to Peter as he delivered the keys, “You are Peter and you are the rock…” Music by Josquin, Allegri and Palestrina was intended to give listeners an idea of how it would feel to be transported to heaven. It still does.
