1a. MELBOURNE: Mozart Requiem

One of the greatest choral works, Mozart’s Requiem (K626) is rarely heard using the instruments of the composer’s time. Classical instruments give a quite different orchestral timbre. The basset horns known to Mozart have a plaintive singing quality. There is no modern equivalent. Written during the final weeks of the composer’s life for a patron who wished to remain anonymous, this unfinished work is shrouded in mystery. Also on the program is Palestrina’s Stabat Mater. This is a one hour program without interval.
