1a. CASTLEMAINE: Mozart Requiem
One of the greatest choral works, Mozart’s Requiem (K626) is rarely heard using the instruments of the composer’s time. Classical instruments give a quite different orchestral timbre. The basset horns known to Mozart have a plaintive singing quality. There is no modern equivalent.
Written during the final weeks of the composer’s life for a patron who wished to remain anonymous, this unfinished work is shrouded in mystery.
Also on the program is Palestrina’s Stabat Mater. This is a one hour program without interval. |

GEELONG: Bach Mass in B Minor
with an orchestra of period instruments
‘The greatest product of the human mind’ – Australian historian, Manning Clark shared his thoughts on Bach’s Mass in B Minor in a conversation with Douglas Lawrence. Composition of the Mass occupied Bach over many years and was not completed until 1749, one year before his death. In the Lutheran church, there was never any call for a completely sung mass, such as was customary in the Catholic church. For this reason, the B Minor was never performed in its entirety during Bach’s lifetime. It is possible that Bach intended it for the dedication of the new Hofkirche – now the Frauenkirche – in Dresden, which was scheduled for completion by 1748 but not finished until one year after his death (1751). In the event the inaugural mass chosen was by Johann Adolph Hasse. The Mass in B Minor seems to have resulted from Bach’s desire for a complete working out of various genres in the final years of his life. This also resulted in the Musical Offering, the Art of Fugue and the publication of a collection of keyboard music known as the Clavierübung. One of the special characteristics of this Mass is the use of a wide array of instruments including trumpet, horn, flute, oboe, bassoon and timpani. The ACC’s performance brings together an orchestra of specialist musicians playing period instruments. |

MACEDON: Kakadu Man
Bill ‘Kakadu Man’ Neidjie, elder of the Gagudju clan, was responsible for opening his native territory to the general public, inviting Australians and international guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the Kakadu National Park, with its sacred ancient rock art sites. To ensure that the history and philosophy of his people were not forgotten, Neidjie broke taboos by publishing some of his people’s traditional stories in two books of poetry. With permission from the poet’s family, the Australian Chamber Choir has commissioned Tom Henry to set extracts from Neidjie’s poems to music. The poems speak of a place where the spiritual world meets the physical. Some would say that all art comes from such a place. Other works on the program have been chosen for their resonance with this theme. The ACC will tour a Kakadu Man program with 16 concerts in Germany, Denmark and Switzerland during June and July, 2015. - Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) Mass in G Minor
- Giovanni Gabrieli (1557–1612) - Magnificat
- Tom Henry (born 1971) Kakadu Man (2015): This Earth, Rain, Return to Earth
