1. SYDNEY: True Romantics

Why is light cast upon the sorrowful? These are the first words of Brahms’ Motet Op.74. And the answer unfolds as one listens to the program. Throughout history, when composers have dwelt on emotions of sadness and longing, they have produced some of the most movingly beautiful and uplifting music. Taking in a broad range of music, from Monteverdi Madrigals to Ravel’s luscious Chansons, the program includes Elgar’s arrangement for voices of Nimrod from his Enigma Variations and Samuel Barber’s haunting vocal version of his Adagio for Strings.
A private exhibition viewing (including light refreshments) commences at 6.30pm. The concert commences at 7.15pm and lasts for one hour without interval.

In this program, Douglas Lawrence presents his selection of the most entertaining Christmas music from the late 1500s to the late 1700s, with music by Bach (In dulci jubilo, Singet dem Herren, O Jesulein süss), Byrd, Handl, Palestrina, Praetorius, Marenzio, Schütz and Scheidt.
